RARE unique 19th century publication of two 18th-century Brazilian-Portuguese poems, dealing with episodes from the South American history and written by adherents of the early Arcadian (pastoral) style. The first poem, `O Uruguay` by José Basílio da Gama, depicts the Jesuit revolt in Uruguay in a light very different from that of Voltaire`s well-known version. The second, `O Caramurú` by José de Santa Rita Durao, deals with the life of early the Portuguese settler Diogo Álvares Correia among the Native Brazilians. 130x85mm. 449 pages.
