Description
SIGNED BY WOLFGANG PAALEN with dedication to Dr. Leslie Grey written in French, dated 1948, Mexico. This album is the only extensive study in English of Wolfgang Paalen (1905–1959), an important Austrian-Mexican surrealist painter and influential theorist, whose work deserves to be better known. Paalen chose to isolate himself in Mexico in the latter part of his life and later committed suicide. The text reveals the intricacies of Paalen`s style with illustrations and text by Gustave Regler (1898–1963), a German Socialist novelist and critic. 215x275mm. 72 pages. 67 plates. Hardcover with dust-jacket. Black lettering on front cover and spine. Jacket worn and slightly stained, missing a small piece, taped and torn in several places. Few small pieces of paper stuck to cover. Binding loose and visible between frontispiece and title-page. Page 5/6 upper corner torn and missing. Page edges water-stained (no damage to plates). Pages slightly wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare limited edition is otherwise in good overall condition. We offer this book at a reduced price, despite the scarcity of Paalen`s signatures.
