EXTREMELY RARE 1719 compilation of essays on physiology and microbiology by the Dutch scientist Antonie Leeuwenhoek, a pioneer of microscopy and discoverer of the bacteria and spermatozoa. The book features b&w engraving on frontispiece and several b&w fold-out plates with depictions of various cells and microorganisms sketched by van Leeuwenhoek. 225x170mm. 446 pages. Red quarter-cloth hardcover with gilt lettering on spine. Spine slightly rubbed, mostly on edges and hinges. Pages yellowing, slightly wavy and rough-cut as published. Several worm holes throughout the book, minimal damage to text and plates. [SUMMARY]: Save for some light wear, this first edition of 18th century seminal medico-biological study is in good condition.
