The editor of this rare and unique 19th-century Jewish prayer book was Isaac Leeser (1806-1868) was an American, Ashkenazi Jewish religious leader, teacher, scholar and publisher who helped found the Jewish press of America, produced the first Jewish translation of the Bible into English, and helped organize various social and educational organizations. Considered one of the most important 19th-century American Jewish personalities, he edited `The Form of Prayers: The Custom of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews`, representing a translation into English of the Sephardic prayers used at Philadelphia`s Mikveh Israel synagogue, where Leeser served as hazzan. 225x150mm. 204 double pages (altogether 408 pages). Brown leather gilt embossed Hardcover with gilt ribbed spine. Text block edges gilt. Cover somewhat curved, rubbed and stained. Cover corners bumped and peeling. Spine edges bumped. Spine edges and hinges rubbed. Spine hinges partly glued. Two peeling-marks on spine front hinge. Text block edges dirty. Pages 36-37 upper corner and bottom edge tattered - NO damage to text. Pages 204 and rear whitepages fore edge creased. Some pages dirty and/or fingerprint-stained/age-stained. Pages yellowing and wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare 19th-century Jewish prayer book is otherwise in good condition.
