EXTREMELY RARE SECOND GERMAN EDITION of Nobel prize winner Samuel Joseph Agnon`s tragic novel, printed in 1920. This is one of Agnon`s first works, written during his visit to Palestine in 1911 and originally published as a serial in a Hebrew periodical in 1912. Both the first and second German editions were translated by Max Strauss and published by Jüdischer Verlag, consisting of 4,000 copies each. Between 1918 and 1920 Agnon made several significant changes to the first edition of the the text, necessitating the printing of this second German edition. [ATTRIBUTES:] 180x125mm, 168pp. Brown board hardcover with illustrated front and back. [CONDITION:] Spine top quarter and bottom edge missing. Cover corners lightly bumped. All pages yellowed. [SUMMARY:] Despite some external damage, this extremely rare early edition of Agnon`s work is well-preserved for its age.
