Description
RARE unique 19th century publication of two 18th-century Brazilian-Portuguese poems, dealing with episodes from the South American history and written by adherents of the early Arcadian (pastoral) style. The first poem, `O Uruguay` by José Basílio da Gama, depicts the Jesuit revolt in Uruguay in a light very different from that of Voltaire`s well-known version. The second, `O Caramurú` by José de Santa Rita Durao, deals with the life of early the Portuguese settler Diogo Álvares Correia among the Native Brazilians. 130x85mm. 449 pages. Patterned blue quarter-leather Hardcover. Gilt lettering on ribbed spine. Cover and spine rubbed. Cover edges and corners peeling. Cover corners and spine edges bumped. Spine front hinge upper part cracked. Front cover, spine and six first pages detached from binding. First 5 unpaginated pages detached from binding, but attached to front cover. Ex libris sticker on endpaper. Previous owner`s name written on title page. Tape residues on whitepages. Binding visible between last page verso and errata page. Some pages very slightly age-stained. Pages yellowing and slightly wavy. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book of neoclassical Latin-American poems is otherwise intact and in good reading condition.
