RARE elaborately bound epic poem by José Hernández (1834-1886), an Argentine journalist, poet, and politician best known as the author of the epic poem Martín Fierro. The poem was published in two parts, El Gaucho Martin Fierro (1872) and La Vuelta de Martin Fierro (1879), this book being the first part part. The poem is primarily a tribute to gauchos and their way of life and is considered the high point of "gauchesque" poetry, modeled after the rural Argentine ballads known as payadas. 20x14.5 cm. 341 pages.
