Description
RARE travel book describing the second journey made by Jacques Faitlovitch (1881-1955), who traveled to Ethiopia for the first time in 1904, with support from the French banker Baron Edmond de Rothschild. An Ashkenazi Jew born in Lodz in Poland, Faitlovitch later became a student of Ethiopian languages in the Sorbonne under the renowned Jewish-French Orientalist and traveler Joseph Halévy (1827-1917), who in 1868 was sent by the Alliance Israélite Universelle to Abyssinia to study the conditions of the Falashas. Often called the "father of the Falashas", Faitlovitch was a man who devoted his life to the cause of his “Black brethren” in Abyssinia, indirectly contributing to their immigration to Israel. He visited eleven times the Falashas bringing back dozens of Falasha manuscripts, objects and books, writing reports which still remain a source of ethnographic information for researchers today, creating pro-Falasha committees and mobilizing the international community to encourage the immigration of this community towards what was then Palestine and later Israel.
