Description
RARE album of photographs of Sao Paulo at the beginning of 20th-century by William Gaensly (born Wilhelm Gänsli 1843-1928) - a Swiss-Brazilian photographer known for his photographic postcards of Sao Paulo between 1895 and 1925. The introductory text and notes in Portuguese, English and Spanish are by Boris Kossoy (b.1941) - a photographer and historian whose works are part of permanent collections in institutions worldwide, such as the Museum of Modern Art (NY), Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris), Centro de la Imagen (Mexico DF), Museum of Modern Art (SP), Pinacoteca do Estado (SP), and others. Kossoy was responsible for the advancement of historical research of photography in Brazil, and wrote a comprehensive monograph on Antoine Hercule Romuald Florence (1804-1879) - a French-Brazilian painter and inventor, known as the isolate inventor of photography in Brazil three years before Daguerre (however, he was never recognized internationally as one of the inventors of photography), using the matrix negative/positive, still in use. 320x240mm. 154 pages. Oblong blue cloth Hardcover with illustrated dust-jacket. Silver lettering on front cover and spine. Jacket slightly yellowing. Jacket edges slightly worn. Jacket front side upper edge creased and slightly torn/taped. Cover and spine edges fading. Text block edges yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare album of early photographs of Sao Paulo is in good condition.
