Description
THIS VOLUME ONLY. RARE collection of texts in the Urmian dialect of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, with Latin transcription and an accompanying Russian translation, the majority of the texts being tales and fables characteristic of Oriental folklore, with specimens of folk poetry. The translator and editor who also recorded the orally conveyed texts - Konstantin Tsereteli (1921-2004), was a major Georgian scholar of Semitic languages, an eminent authority on Aramaic dialects. The Urmia dialect has become the prestige dialect of Assyrian Neo-Aramaic after 1836, when that dialect was chosen by Justin Perkins, an American Presbyterian missionary, for the creation of a standard literary dialect of Assyrian. 260x175mm. XXII+152 pages. Beige cloth Hardcover with dust-jacket. Black lettering on front cover. Jacket yellowing, rubbed and partly torn. Jacket spine edges torn-out. Jacket edges tattered and partly taped. Rear cover slightly curved. Cover corners slightly bumped. Spine edges bumped. Spine upper edge slightly stained. Inner cover yellowing/age-stained. Pages bottom corner water-stained - NO damage to text. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book, of interest to scholars of Semitic languages and folklorists, is otherwise in good condition.
