In the spirit of the "Wissenschaft des Judentums" movement, the periodical featured articles on every subject that was deemed relevant to Jews: from scholarly articles by Abraham Geiger on medieval Hebrew poetry through expositions of the various Jewish communities in Asia, to light-hearted gossip on the rich and famous in the Jewish world. As the name implies, the text is accompanied by numerous b&w engravings by unknown artists; most of them are portraits, other depict Biblical and historical scenes related to the articles.
