The poem is a highly imaginative version of the combats between Christians and Muslims at the end of the First Crusade, during the Siege of Jerusalem. The translation is by the eminent English writer and translator John Hoole (1727-1803), best known for his translations of Torquato Tasso`s `Jerusalem Delivered`, and Ariosto`s `Orlando Furioso`, as well as other works from the Italian.
